Check Out What The Numbers And Letters Written On The Auto Gear Knob Mean!

Did you know that each number and letter written on the auto gear knob have a specific meaning? In this blog post, BMW of Fort Walton Beach will discuss each number and letter and provide some examples. Keep reading to learn more!

The first point to know is that the numbers on the gear knob correspond to the various gears available in your vehicle. For example, if your car has five gears, there will be a number five on the gear knob.

The second thing to know is that the letters on the auto gear knob represent your car’s different types of transmission. The initials PRNDL, often pronounced “Prindle,” are inscribed on the gearbox. The following is a list of what they stand for or represent.

P: Park.

The gearbox gears are locked while in the park, preventing the wheels from going forward or backward. For many individuals, the park transmission mode’s primary role is to act as a brake.

R: Reverse

Reverse gear, or the gear in which the automobile is driven backward, is represented by this letter.

N: Neutral

The tires are free to spin since the gears (forward and reverse) are disengaged. Drivers rarely utilize the N setting unless their vehicle’s engine won’t start or they need it pushed or pulled away.

D: Drive.

This is the selection at which the automatic gearbox gear kicks in. As you accelerate, it will shift into higher gears as the engine RPM reaches your desired level, sending power to your wheels.

Manual gear options for forward-gear operation are indicated by the numbers following the “D” on your automatic gearbox, with “1” signifying the lowest gear and more significant numbers suggesting higher gears.

D1: On sand and muddy roads, this helps to boost torque.

D2: Assists the vehicle when it is going uphill, such as on steep roads, or provides a quick boost to the engine, similar to how manual transmissions operate.

D3: Since it revs up the engine for more efficient overtaking, it’s commonly referred to as an overdrive switch. The wheels travel faster than the engine due to the overdrive gear ratio.

L: Low Gear.

When in Drive, increasing speed forces the automatic gearbox to move up. Keep the gear selector on low to avoid shifting up. Downshifting to ‘L’ increases your vehicle’s pulling power, so do so while pulling a heavy load or traveling up a hill when the engine is struggling to keep up.

S: Sport.

Sports mode is similar to driving mode, except that the automobile has been adjusted. Driving in “Drive” saves the most gas, but in “Sport,” the car spends a longer time in each gear, allowing it to accelerate more swiftly and with more power.

M: Manual

The letter “M” is more prevalent in modern automated cars. You can travel manually by pushing the M button on the gear selection lever. Unlike the automatic transmission, the manual transmission allows you to shift speeds manually.
