The M3 sits at the top of the 3 Series lineup as BMW's high-performance sports sedan. Per BMW USA's M3 specifications, the current G80 generation is built around the S58 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six. The trim ladder breaks down like this, so you know which one you're cross-shopping before you call.

• M3 (base): 473 horsepower, 6-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive. This is the purist's pick and the only way to get three pedals.
• M3 Competition: 503 horsepower, 8-speed M Steptronic automatic, rear-wheel drive. BMW quotes a 0–60 mph time of roughly 3.8 seconds.
• M3 Competition xDrive: 523 horsepower with BMW's M-tuned all-wheel drive, which drops the 0–60 to about 3.4 seconds and adds a rear-wheel-only mode for when you want to misbehave on a closed course.

If you want the wagon, the M3 Competition xDrive Touring brings the same drivetrain in a five-door body. Inventory on that one is scarce, so call before you fall in love with the idea.

Performance that still works as a daily driver

The M3 does two jobs at once. It seats four adults, swallows a real trunk's worth of luggage, and then sharpens into something track-capable the instant you press the M button. For Emerald Coast drivers, that means the same car handles the Monday commute up Beal Parkway and a Saturday run east on US-98 toward Destin with equal composure.

A practical Florida note our advisors raise on every M3 test drive — the running costs worth knowing before you buy:

• Fuel economy. The EPA rates the M3 around 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway depending on configuration. Confirm the exact figure for any model year and trim at fueleconomy.gov.
• Premium fuel. The S58 wants 91 octane or higher.
• Honest fit. If your driving is mostly stop-and-go errands and a tank of premium every week makes you wince, we'll say so before you buy.

Safety and crash data.

If you want to check the M3's safety record, two independent sources cover it. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (iihs.org) publishes ratings for the 3 Series range the M3 is built on, and the NHTSA database (nhtsa.gov) lists recall and complaint history for any specific M3 model year.

On any used M3 we take in, checking the VIN against open NHTSA recalls is part of reconditioning, so anything outstanding is closed before delivery.

What sets the M3 apart is the steering feel and the high-revving inline-six — the character that makes the Emerald Coast's open two-lanes feel made for it.

• M3 vs. Audi RS5 / RS4. The Audis lean toward all-weather all-wheel-drive comfort and a quieter cabin. The M3 leans toward steering feel and adjustability, and it's the only one of the group that still offers a true manual gearbox in the base car. If three pedals matter to you, the conversation is short.
• M3 vs. Mercedes-AMG C63. The latest C63 moved to a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The M3 kept its inline-six. It's a natural cross-shop, and if you want the straightforward, high-revving six, the M3 is the one to drive. • M3 vs. a loaded M340i. This is the comparison we steer people toward most often. The M340i is quick, comfortable, and cheaper to own. If you're not going to use the M3's track capability, it's often the smarter buy, and we'll say so. What our team inspects on a used M3 before it's listed.

When a pre-owned M3 comes through our doors, here's the short version of what our factory-trained BMW technicians check before we list it for sale:

1. Brakes.We measure rotor and pad wear, and on carbon-ceramic-equipped cars we look hard for heat-cracking. These are among the most expensive consumables on the car.
2. Tires.We confirm the staggered fitment is correct and matched, and we check tread depth front and rear. Mismatched or worn performance tires are a common tell of a hard-driven car.
3. Differential and driveline.We inspect the M differential for leaks and the half-shafts for play, since launch-control abuse shows up here first.
4. Service history and VIN options.We pull the BMW build record to verify factory options versus dealer add-ons, and we confirm the maintenance history lines up with the odometer.
5. Open recalls.We cross-check the VIN against NHTSA's recall database and close anything outstanding before delivery.

That process is exactly why a trade-in M3 whose brake and tire condition doesn't match the story its records tell won't make our retail line — it gets sent to wholesale instead of to you.

You want a specific color-and-option build, you plan to keep the car five-plus years, and you want the full factory warranty clock starting fresh.

Buy a BMW Certified Pre-Owned M3 if

You're comfortable with one to three years of age and want a meaningful discount off original sticker. CPO is a standard BMW program — it adds factory-backed coverage and a multi-point inspection, but it exists at every BMW store, so it's not a reason to pick us specifically. What sets a used M3 apart is the individual car and how it was cared for, which is where our inspection comes in.

The catch most M3 shoppers miss

A hard-tracked M3 with carbon-ceramic brakes and worn tires can cost more to bring back to spec than the discount you saved buying it.
